Project Overview

The 1994 Forest and Wildlife Policy stress the need for all persons to help in the responsible Management of Ghana’s forests. It take all persons, especially those living near the forest, to get involved in the management of our forests. Local communities living within and around forests have a right and responsibilities and are therefore, called upon to exercise them to help manage the forest. They are expected to identify their own developmental needs to be addressed in the Timber Utilization Contract (TUC) agreement through Social Responsibility Agreements (SRA). The overall objective of the project is “To contribute to the implementation of the Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) processes in providing support to key stakeholder groups to undertake awareness creation and capacity building around issues that are reflected in the Ghana-EU VPA implementation plan”

Project Objectives

  • Objective 1. Forest fringe communities should be responsible for managing their own forest.
  • Objective 2. Forest communities to identify their own needs to be addressed in the Timber Utilization Contracts (TUC)
  • Objective 3: Forest communities trained in social responsibility agreements (SRA).
  •  Objective 4: Build capacity of forest communities to contribute to the implementation of Ghana’s Voluntary Partnership Agreement.

Key Activities Implemented

Activity 1. Trained forest fringe communities in Adaklu and Abutia in the VPA processes.

Activity 2. Build capacity of forest communities to know their rights and responsibilities in the management of Ghana’s forests.

Impact & Results

  • Awareness created in13 communities in and around the Kalakpa resource reserve in the Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) processes.
  • Communities around Kalakpa resource reserve can identify their development needs in the Timber Utility Contracts (TUC) agreement through Social Responsibility Agreements (SRA).
  •  Stakeholder groups capacity built to undertake awareness creation and capacity building around issues that are reflected in the Ghana-EU VPA implementation plan
